Court protects couple condemned karo-kari

KARACHI, March 30 2006: The Sindh High Court has granted protective bail to a woman and her husband who married of their free will and are facing charges of kidnapping and polygamy.

Sher Mohammad of Taluqa Gambat, district Khairpur, has lodged a case against Juman, accusing him of kidnapping his daughter Pervaizan and solemnising a coerced nikkah with her. Sher Mohammad claimed that Pervaizan was already married.

The couple, who fled their area for fear of being declared karo-kari only to be killed, appeared before a Sindh High Court bench on Wednesday for protective bail which was granted after hearing the woman and her lawyer.

Pervaizan denied her father’s allegations against her husband and stated that before marrying Juman she had never been married. She also denied that she was kidnapped by Juman or forced to marry him.

Pervaizan submitted that the police were harassing her and her husband, forcing them to flee to Karachi and appear before the court for protective bail. The counsel for the provincial government submitted that the police was not harassing the couple and was only investigating the kidnapping case that was registered by Pervaizan’s father against Juman.
