Couple sent to jail after failing to produce marriage certificate

SUKKUR: A man and a woman were sent to jail by the civil court of Ubauro on Monday after they failed to produce proof of marriage.

Police had accused Akbar Shar of kidnapping Arbab Khatoon Chachar, 17, from village Laung Chachar in Rawnti police station jurisdiction, near Ubauro. He said he married Arbab Khatoon.

However, the incident sparked enmity between both the tribes and 17 persons, including women and children, were kidnapped by the either tribesmen on Saturday morning, who were later released on late Saturday night, following pressure by the local Sardars and police.

On Monday, the Rawnti police produced the couple in the court of first civil judge Ubauro Mohammad Islamul-Haq Arain, who recorded their statements. Arbab Khatoon stated before the court that she was not kidnapped; rather she fled her house with Akbar Shar and had married with him of her own free will.

The police stated before the court that the girl had been kidnapped and a case was also registered against Akbar. They sought police remand of the couple. After failing to produce Nikah Nama in the court, the judge ordered the police to send the couple to jail, after which Akbar was sent to judicial lock-up of Ubauro and Arbab Khatoon to the Sukkur jail.
