Country to remain disconnected on Oct 26-27

ISLAMABAD- The country would remain disconnected from rest of the world and customers may experience delays and congestion on International Direct Dialing and operator assisted calls on October 26-27 due to upgradation of Submarine Optic Fiber Cable System at segment five Karachi-Djibouti-Mumbai.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation Limited (PTCL) said on October 24, 2002, “A planned outage has been scheduled from 2.30 am on October 26 to October 27.” The data transfer and International Voice and Data connectivity from Karachi, Pakistan via SE-ME-WE-3 Submarine Cable System shall remain suspended for 24 hours.

The PTCL official clarified that this is out of their control as the international operators were involved in the upgradation process. He said, “PTCL engineers are in constant touch with SEA-ME-WE-3 administration to minimize the planned outage period. During this period although International Voice communication will remain operational from transit routes via satellite and a direct analogue submarine cable link with Etisalat (UAE) yet customers may experience some delays and congestion on International Direct Dialing and operator assisted calls.”

The spokesman said PTCL’s main International IP connectivity (STM-1) via SEA-ME-WE-3 on the Pakistan Internet Exchange will be disrupted during this period. He explained, “Due to availability of 34 Mbps Satellite connectivity, partial Internet service will remain operational. PTCL highly regrets this inconvenience to its customers.” The disruption of the communication would negatively affect the business concerns largely dependent on the Internet.
