Countdown after provincial govts’ installation: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said on Thursday the countdown for the restoration of the deposed superior courts judges would begin after installation of all the provincial governments.

Talking to journalists at the Parliament House here before the start of the maiden sitting of the new National Assembly’s regular session, she said some elements were trying to vitiate the political atmosphere in the country, but the government would not allow anybody to take law into their hands.

The minister strongly condemned the attack on former federal minister Dr Sher Afgan and maintained that the culprits, involved in this incident would be brought to book as nobody was above the law.

Replying to a question, the minister said the government would foil conspiracies to create rift among the democratic forces, and would take along all the parties, which believed in supremacy of the Constitution and parliament.

Meanwhile, the minister phoned camerawoman of Geo Television channel Thursday Lala Rukh to inquire about her health, says a press release. The camerawoman was injured during violence in Karachi when she resisted a bid by unscrupulous masked men to snatch her camera.

While strongly condemning the cowardly acts on journalists performing their duties, the minister assured her that the government would make all-out efforts to provide protection to the journalist community.

APP adds: Sherry said the government would hold a thorough probe into the recent incidents of violence in Karachi. She said those involved in such activities do not want reconciliation process to continue but added that such elements would fail to achieve their nefarious designs, a private channel reported.

The minister said the people who were involved in these incidents would be brought to justice so that no one could take the law into his own hands. She said hidden hands behind the plot would be uncovered. Sherry said efforts are being made with the help of other political parties to restore peace in Karachi. She said subversive elements would not be allowed to disturb the peace.

The PPP believes in the rule of law and is deeply concerned over recent acts of rowdyism which took place in Karachi and Lahore. “The two incidents appear to have been engineered by elements who want to bring a bad name to the new democratic governments even before their installation in the provinces,” she said.
