KARACHI- An emergent meeting of the standing committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) will be held at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Islamabad, June 13, at 11 am to discuss the proposed defamation law, which is sought to be promulgated by the government.

Federal Law Minister Khalid Ranjha is in charge of the promulgation of this law, about which he said consultation with the bar bodies, the CPNE and the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) will be held after which the draft law will be finalised.

The CPNE standing committee will deliberate over the proposed law for one hour at its meeting, and will be joined by the Dr Khalid Ranjha at noon.

The minister will present the viewpoint of the law ministry and the government on the prepared defamation law.

The discussion will also include an interaction with the members of the CPNE standing committee and the meeting will be followed by lunch.

The meeting will be presided over by CPNE President Mujib-ur-Rahman Shami.

The Secretary General of the CPNE, Zahid Malik, while communicating to the members the notice of the emergent meeting, has urged them to attend the meeting since a very important matter is to be discussed.

It may be mentioned here that the CPNE president and secretary general have, in a joint statement, already described the prepared defamation law as a ‘draconian law’.

Many of the bar bodies in the country have also opposed this proposed defamation law.
