Council condemns Sangi’s murder

LARKANA, June 06 2006: The district council in its special session here on May 05 condemned the murder of Munir Sangi, a private TV channel cameraman. The council demanded that probe into killing of the cameraman should be conducted by a high court judge. Awam Dost Panel and SNF members requisitioned the session to discuss the murder of Mr Sangi. Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto of the ADP, taking the rostrum, termed the murder a target killing.

She criticised police for its ignorance of not providing first aid to the injured journalist. She said that the administration had failed to contain deteriorating law and order situation in the district. Dr Shabana Jamshid Abro, Fayyaz Bhutto, Akhtar Kalhoro, Khursheed Talat Khatyan and Iqbal Soomro said that the cameraman had given up his life while performing professional duty. They demanded that a policy of life insurance for journalists should be introduced.

Baboo Serwar Siyal of the KPP called for arrest of the killer of Munir Sangi but skipped to criticising PPP’s leadership. PPP and KPP members traded charges and counter-charges and pandemonium was created in the house. Convener Munwar Abro intervened and restored normality. Mr Siyal said that KPP members wanted to bring in a resolution to condemn the murder but the convener did not allow him saying that in requisitioned session no other matter except the agenda could be discussed.

The session went unruly and ADP members leaving their seats chanting slogans staged a sit-in in front of convener who was presiding over the meeting. The district nazim stood up and sided with the KPP members’ resolution which had further charged the atmosphere. Convener Munwar Abro condemned the murder of Munir Sangi and demanded that the government should arrest the killers of Mr Sangi. He demanded that a memorial be built in the city while compensation amount should be raised to Rs1 million from Rs300,0000 announced by the Sindh government.
