Concern over attack on cable operators

PESHAWAR- The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed deep concern over an armed on OK Cable centre in Peshawar in which the staff of the cable centre was beaten and the office was ransacked.

Ina press release issued here on January 10, 2003 the HRCP stated that the incident took place at a location that is hardly 300 meters away from the police station of the area. The police not only failed to intervene and apprehend the culprits but initially even refused to register an First Information Report (FIR) when the victims asked them the police station, it maintained and added a few hours and after strong protest by the people of the area.

The HRCP observed that the Inspector General of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), police who was personally removing posters from the city cinemas during the last few days and did not feel it necessary to visit the spot where the citizens were attacked by armed men and property was damaged under the very nose of the city police. The HRCP demanded an immediate inquiry into the incident and asked the government to ensure the safety and security of the law-abiding citizens.
