Commissioner system bill adopted by assembly

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly adopted on Wednesday three bills pertaining to the revival of commissioner system, police act and land revenue with a majority vote amid commotion in the house and a subsequent walkout by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

During the 70-minute session, the assembly sent back the governor’s message on The Sindh Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill, 2008 (Bill No 6 of 2008), for reconsideration.

Every time Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza, who presided over the session, asked the law minister to move a motion, agitating MQM legislators raised slogans and some of them were seen tearing up copies of the order of the day.

Talking to newsmen after walking out of the assembly, deputy leader of the MQM parliamentary party said his party had decided to sit on the opposition benches because of the “autocratic and undemocratic attitude” of the Pakistan People’s Party.

After the session, the PPP parliamentary party leader said the MQM was not used to being in opposition.

The PML-F parliamentary party leader said his party favoured the commissioner system because the local government system under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance had failed to provide relief to the masses.
