Code after consultation with media: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Sherry Rehman on Sunday said the Pakistan People’s Party was not in favour of confrontation among the institutions and wanted to carry forward the democratic process with a reconciliatory spirit.

She said this while talking to newsmen at a reception she hosted for journalists at the PPP Secretariat. “Our party respects the journalist community which has always supported us in the struggle for democracy,” she added.

She said the government would evolve a code of conduct in collaboration with journalistsí organisations, as according to her the PPP government did not believe in imposing curbs on the media as was done by the past government.

To a question, she said PPP leader Shaheed Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for the cause of democracy and reconciliation in the country and her party would follow her footsteps to strengthen democracy.

Sherry Rehman said the government intended to give maximum freedom to the media and instead of imposing anything, the criteria for freedom of media would be finalised after consulting all the stakeholders.

The minister said the consultation process would be made with everyone to address the Wage Board Award issue. “If we do not address the concerns of the media, it will become very difficult to move forward,” she added.

She condemned the attacks on former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and former federal minister Dr Sher Afgan Niazi just before the installation of the new governments in Sindh and the Punjab. To a question about the recent violence in Karachi, she said that PPP activists had always become the main victims of the terrorist activities in the city.
