City Council passes resolution against Ghani

KARACHI – Opposition members of City Council Tuesday walked out in protest when their resolution pertaining to the imposing of emergency in the country, removal of Supreme Court Judges, ban on private TV channels, arrest of political activists, was not accepted by the Convenor of the Council for discussion.

City Council session was presided over by Naib City Nazim Nasreen Jalil. Opposition leaders Saeed Ghani and Abdul Razaq presented a resolution about the on going circumstances of the country including imposing of emergency.

Convenor of the council Nasreen Jalil said that the limitations of the council did not allow that matters related to the Federal and Provincial level could be discussed in the City Council. But when the Opposition members tried to speak up on the issue, she suspended the City Council proceedings for fifteen minutes.

When session resumed the opposition members again tired to raise the same issue, Haq Parast members tabled a resolution political workers can not be mem­ber of the city council and waving a picture news items published in section of press in which opposition leader of Awam Doost group Saeed Ghani participated during a protest rally held in the city couple of days ago. The treasury member Syed Kahlil Ahmed tabled a resolution that according to the SLGO section 39, 40, 41, that workers of political parties can not be a member of city council but some of the members of city council openly violating the SGLO, therefore the council demanded of the Sindh local Commission and Election Commission of Pakistan that the membership be cancelled of those city council members who were representatives of any political party.

Haq Parast members Asif Siddiqui said on that occasion city councils was for the civic problems of the city but some of the members of opposition made it political battlefield, thus trhe resolution in this regard to be approved and memberships of those members should not cancel, he requested.

The opposition members stood up and raised the slogans against the ruling party and walk out of the session in protest. They gathered outside the City Council Hall in the corridor and chanted slogans against the Musharraf led government.

After walking out of the opposition members to the council session, members of ruling party tabled five resolutions which were approved on majority basis.
