Cinema strike

LAHORE – The Pakistan film industry has threatened a countrywide indefinite strike from May 6 if the government does not accept its demands.

In a five-point charter of demands presented on April 27, it asked the government to explain its policy on the exchange of feature films between Pakistan and India, an issue which has clearly divided the industry with cinema owners isolated on one side and producers, directors, exhibitors and actors grouping in the other camp.

Ending video piracy Of films with strict implementation of the Copyright Act, bringing cable operators under a legal discipline by banning the screening of pirated Indian and Pakistani movies, lowering the entertainment tax on cinema houses and declaring film as an industry are other demands. The demands have been incorporated in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) reached recently among the Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association, the Pakistan Film Producers Association, the Pakistan Film Distributors Association, the Pakistan Film Directors Association and the Movie Artists Association of Pakistan.
