Children most vulnerable to abduction, says LHRLA

* Report says 256 children missing, only 46 recovered
ISLAMABAD: Children are most vulnerable to abduction and their recovery rate is very low, said a report compiled by the Centre for Missing Children of the Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid (LHRLA).

According to the report, 256 children went missing during the last 12 months in Rawalpindi and Islamabad and only 46 of them were recovered. The LHRLA reported that around 974 child abduction and abuse cases had been reported in the twin cities from March 2006 to March 2007, and that only 18 percent of them had been recovered with the Centre for Missing ChildrenÂ’s help. The data was collected through 22 English and Urdu newspapers, which stated that 245 of the 472 abused children were girls. It said that 43 of them were raped, 12 gang-raped and seven were subjected to vanni (marriage for compensation). It said that gangs sodomised 12 boys while another 15 others were raped by individuals, 234 children were kidnapped and six ran away from their homes.

Save the Children UK (SCUK) has helped the LHRLA set up the centre to evolve a friendly and protective environment for children. The centre had launched an awareness programme and contacted 1,460 children in schools and societies to educate them about their rights.
