Child friendly newspaper awarded Media role in child rights highlighted

ISLAMABAD: Speakers, Thursday, at an award giving ceremony on “Child Friendly Newspaper Award 2009” observed that several countries of the world continued to face the problems of child protection, negligence, abuse and exploitation and in the developing world, particularly, the problems were widespread and acute.

The event was organised by an NGO Sahil. People belonging to various segments of society attended the ceremony.

While speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister for Human Rights Syed Mumtaz Gilani said that the history of the world for the last few decades had shown the people’s concerns about child protection and desire for creating awareness among the masses through media participation for protection of the children’s rights.

Mumtaz Gilani said the government was well aware of the issues related to child abuse and commercial exploitation, which existed in the region as well as various other parts of the developing world. He said, “I am obliged to inform you about the measures that the government had undertaken in this regard.

He added that the phenomenon of child protection there fore, needed to be dealt with in a transnational and national context through cooperation among the various institutions ie the Government as well as private sector and the most important is media.

He said that media became an effective tool as fourth pillar of the state. “The role of media has increased manifolds in brining the, issues of human rights to limelight”, he added. He lauded the newspapers and media personnel who were handling the issues of child protection especially child sexual abuse in a meaningful and amicable manner because sensitive reporting of the issues would create profound impact of society, he said.

On the occasion, Norwegian Ambassador Robert Kvile commended Sahil’s efforts for continuously arranging award for last 4 years. It’s really credible effort. He congratulate those newspapers and their editors who were the winners of Child Friendly Newspaper Award 2009.

Manizeh Bano Execut Director Sahil added that: I highly appreciate the commitment of our, honorable guests, media and civil society members for their participation.

The newspaper that got awards included Daily Khabrain Islamabad, Kaavish Hyderabad and Daily Leader Lahore.
