Cheating in exams: media’s role

I WAS shocked to read the letter by Khola Nighat ‘Cheating in exams: gloomy picture’ and ‘Teachers or collaborators’ by Alvina Asad (May 11). Cheating in examinations is an epidemic and if not controlled it is going to be more dangerous than deadly diseases.

This will ruin the character of our future generations and in the next couple of decades we will have a large population of youngsters whom we can rightly call ‘literate illiterates.Â’

I remember in my school days, the class teachers would boost our confidence before examinations and emphasised on the value of examinations. Just before the holidays for the preparation of examinations, our principal used to visit our class and talked to us individually, assuring us that if we work hard and concentrate on studies, the success would be ours. I vividly remember my school principal, saying that examinations held today are my career path for tomorrow.

Nowadays we have so many TV channels showing dramas, highlighting family and social issues. We have excellent playwriters available. I am sure they can write on this pertinent subject to eradicate the menace of using unfair means in examinations. Our clerics can also highlight this problem during Friday sermon.
