Centenary of radio broadcast from December 21

KARACHI: A two-day international conference is scheduled to be held on December 21 and 22 at the Karachi Arts Council to mark the centenary of the first-ever programme broadcast to a mass audience in the United States.Though the patent for the invention of “wireless telegraphy” (later to be known as “radio”) was granted to Marconi in 1896, it was 10 years later, on December 24, 1906, that the first-ever radio programme was broadcast.

The conference, entitled, “One hundred years of radio: voice of the people Yesterday, today, tomorrow”, will be jointly organised by JJ Media (Pvt) Ltd, Citizens’ Media Commission of Pakistan. An independent public interest body is co-hosting the event with the help of Departments of Mass Communication, University of Karachi, Federal Government Urdu University and Jinnah University for Women. The Pakistan office of the German Foundation, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, is also extending its support to the event.
