Cellular service shutdown

Pakistan Press Foundation

Sir: It is extremely disturbing to note that the government has decided to follow the policies of the previous one when it comes to shutting down all cellular services on occasions of high security alert. The 9th and 10th of Muharram saw a complete closure of all mobile phone services in all the major cities of Pakistan, rendering many millions without the ability to communicate effectively. In this day and age of quick cellular connections, depending upon one’s landline number has become obsolete. I know many people who do not even have landline numbers installed in their homes, leaving them without the means to stay in touch with just about anyone.

This is not the way to outwit the terrorists as they will surely create backup plans now that they see how regular cellular shutdowns have become. Can we not strategise and outsmart those who wish to cause us harm instead of terribly inconveniencing the public? The government has to stop this nonsense and actually devise some intelligent plan, or is that too much to ask?
