CEC urged to deprive Sethi of vote right

ISLAMABAD, June 24: The Chief Election Commissioner on Thursday issued notice to the Attorney General on a petition filed by PML(N) MNA from Islamabad seeking disenfranchisement of Najam Sethi on the allegation that he spoke against the ideology of Pakistan.

Syed Zafar Ali Shah, parliamentary secretary for parliamentary affairs, in his petition urged the CEC to determine the religious status of Najam Sethi, editor of The Friday Times.

The PML(N) MNA after giving full background of the controversy how Najam Sethi delivered a speech in India and what was the report of Pakistan’s ambassador made three prayers to the CEC.

Firstly, the religious status of Najam Sethi be determined on the touchstone of definition of “Muslim” and “non-Muslim” given in Article 260(3).

Secondly, his name be struck from the voters list to a Muslim seat of any assembly if he is so listed and does not fulfil the requirement of a Muslim as given by the Constitution.

Thirdly, his name be struck off from the electoral rolls to a non-Muslim seat as well since he has violated Article 63(1)(g) and Article 62(h).

Syed Zafar Shah told reporters that the CEC had issued notice to AG for July 9.
