Candlelight vigil held outside Jang office

Thousands of people belonging to different walks of life participated in a candlelight vigil held outside the Jang Group offices on Monday evening to express solidarity with the protest against the closure of Geo and another other TV channel.

The participants included members of civil society organisations, political leaders and media people from different organisations. Geo TV network had set up camps outside the Jang office since it was put off-air around the world late on Saturday night. The protest camps continued for a third consecutive day and are slated to continue till Geo’s restoration. The entire day on Monday, songs were played in the area, which attracted a large number of people.

Exactly at 7pm on Monday evening, all the street lights outside the Jang building, as well as the lights of the building itself, were switched off and hundreds of Geo employees and others present lit candles, creating a sentimental environment.

A large number of bouquets were also placed at protest camps sent from across the world and Pakistan. Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman, Imran Khan, also sent a bouquet sympathising with Geo.

The leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and ladies wing attended the ceremony and also lit candles along with other people and employees to express their sympathy and solidarity with the employees.

Images from a projector also showed clippings of the last day when Geo was ordered to shutdown. A prayer was also offered asking God to give patience and tolerance to in order to meet the challenges ahead and to cope with the prevailing circumstances.

Thousands of people have thronged the Geo office to record their comments in the ‘Solidarity Book.’ A large number of law-enforcement agencies were also deployed outside the Jang offices.
