Calligraphic exhibition in connection with Muharram opens at RAC

ISLAMABAD: In connection with Muharramul Haram, the Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC) on Monday organised a calligraphic exhibition by Pride of Performance calligrapher Aftab Ahmed Khan.

Riyadh Yosuf Ahmed al Raisi, the ambassador of Sultanate of Oman, inaugurated the exhibition while Member of National Assembly Tahira Aurangzeb, Khana Farhang Iran Director General Muhammad Akbari and JS Public School VC Zareem Kamran participated as special guests.

Naheed Manzoor, RAC Resident Director Waqar Ahmed and other dignities were also present on the occasion. More than 50 unique art pieces, mostly comprising Khat-e-Nastaleaque and Kofi, were put on display at the exhibition.

The work on paper and gold leaf, oil on canvas, leather work, ceramics work, cut-outs and glass work were also much appreciated by a large number of people from the twin cities. Aftab Ahmed Khan learnt calligraphy from his father, famous calligrapher Haji Muhammad Sharif. He is an artist, calligraphist, muralist, ceramist, pictorialist and writer of international fame.

He is the author of 35 books on art and culture and has published 30 international pictorial exhibitions’ catalogues. He has been honoured with scores of national and international awards, including the Pride of Performance, Prime Minister’s Gold Medal and four Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Riyadh Yousuf congratulated Aftab Ahmed Khan on his achievements and said that such kind of work could be expected only from an inborn artist. He said that the Rawalpindi Arts Council honoured him to inaugurate the exhibition based on Quranic verses.

The envoy said that the relations between Pakistan and Oman were old and being Muslim country both had similar traditions. He further said that both the counties would extend cooperation in the field of art and culture.

Tahira Aurangzeb said that she had been “inspired by the magnificent exhibit”, and praised the efforts of the Rawalpindi Arts Council for conducting the exhibition. She said tha tAftab Ahmed Khan is a precious asset of Pakistan who had represented his country worldwide. Naheed Manzoor said that it was a great honour for the council to organise the exhibition. The exhibition will remain open for the general public until November 24.
