Cable operators welcome removal of restrictions

KARACHI: Various cable operator associations in the city have welcomed the government’s gesture of lifting harsh restrictions from the media, moved by Information Minister Sherry Rehman on Friday.

The restrictions were forced by PEMRA, through an ordinance in November, after the president imposed a State of Emergency, restricting live broadcasts, canceling licenses and confiscating equipment.

Malir Cantonment Area’s Idrees Siddiqi said it was a positive step towards normalcy and it was the responsibility of satellite channels to avoid the exploitation of incidents which give a negative impression of Pakistan to the rest of the world. “Due to live coverage, the whole world is seeing what you want to show them. We should not forget our responsibility of portraying a good image of Pakistan to the world.”

Akhter, a worker of the Karachi Cable Service, appreciated the move, saying that the government should do more for cable operators. “We have been demanding for a long time that the government declare the cable operating services an industry, as it affects millions of families around the country,” he said.

Cable operators from different parts of the city expressed satisfaction and hoped that the government will take more such steps to strengthen their business.
