Cable operators warned by Pemra watchdog

QUETTA: A meeting of the Council of Complaints (CoCs) PEMRA held March 26, warned cable television operators of Balochistan not to originate local channels and broadcast the banned channels through their network otherwise strict action would take against them.

The meeting chaired by CoCs Commissioner Faqir Mohammad Baloch also directed regional office of Pemra to take effective measures to ensure implementation of Pemra laws in the province.

It also took notice of complaints regarding non-provision of service by some cable operators and directed them to improve their service otherwise action would be taken against them in accordance with the Pemra Ordinance.

The meeting urged all the cable operators to abide by the law, behave sensibly and realize the sensitiveness of the general public. It also underlined the need for introduction of CTV technology in the province.

The Secretary and Regional General Manager Pemra Zahid Hussain on the occasion informed the meeting about details of monitoring report compiled by his office till March 24, 2004.

He also apprised the meeting of the visit of the inspection team of his office to coastal belt of the province which detected five illegal cable operators in Turbat District.

He said the team issued show cause notices to illegal cable operators and warned them to legalize their network within two weeks else their cable stations would be ceased.

The meeting lauded role of Quetta cable operators for telecasting sober programmes after Ashura incident. It also appreciated performance of the Regional Office of Pemra for achieving revenue targets fixed by Pemra headquarters.
