Cable operators told not to air proscribed channels

LAHORE- The cable operators of Lahore and its suburbs have assured the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) that they would not telecast proscribed channels.

The assurance was given by the representatives of the Cable Operators Association to PEMRA officials at a meeting held here on July 21st, 2003.

The authority officials informed the cable operators that the government had taken a serious view that pornographic contents of foreign channels were being telecast which were contrary to the norms and values of the society.

PEMRA officials informed the cable operators that the policies of line/loop holders and licensing of foreign channels had been prepared and introduced in the light of the recommendations made by the Cable Operators Association.

The authority officials said the channels would go a long way in facilitating the cable industry for provision of useful information, education and entertainment to the society.

PEMRA extended its full cooperation to resolve the issues being faced by the cable operators.

The participants in the meeting were also briefed about penalties and punishments to the offenders for showing any unethical programme.
