Cable Operators call for tax withdrawal

LAHORE, June 18 2006: The Cable Operators Association has asked the government to withdraw Rs 25 tax on new cable connection otherwise they would go on strike throughout the Country. Talking to the press on June 17 at Lahore Press Club, General Secretary of the association Imran Nadeem set a deadline of June 22 for the withdrawal of the tax. He stated that cable was the source of livelihood for 500,000 families in Pakistan and the Operators were doing a great service by furthering the dream of President Musharraf of modernizing Pakistan.

He urged President Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, PML President Ch Shujaat Hussain, Finance Minister Omar Ayub, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani, Chairman CBR and PEMRA Chief Iftikhar Rashid to reconsider the decision of imposing the tax and with draw it.

The general secretary said that some elements were launching deliberate efforts to undermine president’s dream of bringing modern technology to Pakistan. He also said that the cable operators were already overburdened. Imran said that if the tax were not withdrawn, they would be left with no other option but to shut down their business.
