ISLAMABAD: Renowned broadcaster, compere, anchorperson, social worker Arifa Shamsa was laid to rest at H-11 graveyard on Friday. She was the mother-in-law of Dawn’s senior staff reporter Mubarak Zeb Khan.

She breathed her last early Friday morning after a protracted illness. She was 77.

Born to well-known literary and social family in pre-partitioned Delhi, Ms Shamsa was the daughter of Delhi’s literary and social figure Bhaiyya Ahsan-ul Haq.

Her family moved to Karachi, where she did her masters, in social work, from Karachi University with distinction while bagging gold medal in 1967.

She joined the ministry of population in 1969 and retired as an additional secretary after serving National Reconstruction Bureau in 2002.

For last five decades, Shamsa had also contributed to different dailies and also briefly worked as a media consultant for the development sector. Arifa Shamsa had also been an active member of All Pakistan Women’s Association (Apwa) where she worked with Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan for a long time.
