British journalist formally booked

ISLAMABAD- The Pakistani authorities after gathering enough evidence of extra professional activities of Amardeep Bassey, an Indian origin British Journalist of ‘The Sunday Mercury’, UK, have booked him formally for further investigations.

He was arrested along-with two Pakistani companions Naushad Ali Afridi and Khitab Shah Shinwari on Friday (May 10) at Torkham, Pak-Afghan border while entering Pakistan from Afghanistan on the charge of violating regular procedure of immigration, an official source on their way back to Pakistan from Afghanistan.

“He was issued single entry visa for Pakistan and after entering the country’s territory, Bassey crossed over into Afghanistan through a clandestine route instead of the normal immigration channels and again entered Pakistan. As he did not wish to have a mark of exit and enter on his passport and tried to pose that he did not leave Pakistan,” the official source said.

He was arrested at Torkham on not having valid visa to re-enter Pakistan by Pakistani authorities.

During initial investigation, a sophisticated wristwatch equipped with a tiny camera and a pocket walkie talkie was recovered from him at the time of his arrest.

“These articles recovered from him during initial investigation, made him look highly suspicious, particularly as these articles were found incompatible with his professional requirements,” the source said.

The authorities therefore have decided to investigate him further for his real objective of visiting Pakistan besides investigating him on violating the immigration procedure in the country.
