Bomber tips off police and averts blast

Karachi:A tip-off from a bomber with a conscience helped save human lives and property on Friday evening, police officials said.

CCPO Karachi Azhar Ali Farooqi told newsmen that a call was received by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) from an anonymous caller at 8.45pm using a Ufone number which informed them that he (the caller) had planted a remote control bomb – an improvised explosive device (IED), in a car and parked the car at Park Towers.

The CPLC conveyed the message to the police which immediately which swung into action. Police sources told The News that the bomber informed the CPLC that he was making the call because “I saw so many women and children in the shopping mall. I cannot let them die. That is why I am telling you I have planted the bomb and please make sure you defuse it.”

Farooqi said that on receiving the call, he ordered the DIG-Zone South to cordon off the area and had the building evacuated. Soon after, police located the car and jammed the timer machine. They then took the car to the beach Where the bomb disposal squad defused the IED.

This device which was planted in two boxes attached to each other and was filled with explosive material, a detonator and timers which was weighed about five kilogrammes each. This ten kilogram bomb would have blasted the building almost completely. This bomb was bigger than any blast in the city so far.

Farooqi added that the IED was connected with the battery of the car, which was being defused by the bomb disposal staff.

The DIG South Zone conveyed the information to the Clifton Town police that a car was parked in the parking lot of Park Towers. Acting on the information, the police and the bomb disposal squad moved to the spot and located the car bearing registration number AB-4852.

The car had been earlier stolen from Ferozeabad police limits on July 10. It was in the name of Mustafa Company Private Limited.
