Body formed to probe manhandling of newsmen by police

LAHORE- Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Ellahi, while taking strict notice of the baton charge and police highhandedness against journalists on May 28, outside the Punjab Assembly has set up a six-member committee headed by the law minister which would submit its report within two weeks.

Pervaiz Ellahi, while talking to a delegation of journalists on May 30, 2003 said that the police have no right whatsoever, to manhandle the journalists who were performing their duties.

“As soon as the committee report is finalised, strict action would be taken against those police officials responsible for this untoward incident,” he assured.

He said that the government would take effective measures to avoid such incidents in future.

The committee constituted by the chief minister also includes Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari, Secretary Mian Abid, Punjab Union of Journalists President Bakhtgir Chaudhry, Secretary General Jalil Hasan Akhtar Raja, Punjab Assembly Press Gallery President Khwaja Farrukh and Secretary Imtiaz Ali Rashid.

Senior journalists who met the chief minister included Chaudhry Khadim Hussain, Shafique Awan, Salma Amber, Fakhra Tehrim and Ijaz Lahori.
