Balochistan Assembly gets Media Centre

QUETTA (May 06 2008): The USAID-Pakistan Office of Democracy and Governance, Director, Michael Hryshchyshyn on Monday inaugurated a Media Centre at the Balochistan Provincial Assembly, says a press release. The Centre provides journalists with the technology they need to cover and report the Assembly’s proceedings.

“We strongly believe that a vibrant democracy requires free and responsible media,” said Hryshchyshyn. “By giving people timely and correct information about what is happening inside the Assembly, the media enable people to gauge the performance of their representatives.”

As part of USAID’s $7.8 million Pakistan Legislative Strengthening Project, the media centre is equipped with computer facilities, Internet access, and photocopying, printing, faxing, and scanning equipment. The project also established a similar Parliamentary Information Technology Resource Centre to help Balochistan Assembly Members serve their constituents more effectively, the release said.

Since 2002, the US Government has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance, and to assist with earthquake reconstruction.-
