Attack on university teacher condemned

HYDERABAD, April 7: The Sindh chapter of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association has condemned the attack on Professor Dr Riaz Ahmed by the personnel of a law-enforcing agency in Karachi University and termed it an insult and humiliation of a university teacher.

The association’s provincial president, Dr Syed Inayatullah Shah, general secretary Professor Badar Soomro and Mehran University Teachers Association president Professor Mushtaq Mirani, also condemned the registration of FIR against professor Riaz Ahmed and raids on his house for his arrest.

In a statement, they expressed surprise on the silence of the democratic parties over maltreatment of the university professor. They linked such events with the appointment of retired persons as the vice chancellors of the universities, since they give least attention to the sanctity of universities and protection of university professors. The professors feel insecure and they cannot perform their teaching and research duties in the environment of harassment and humiliation, they added. They demanded withdrawal of FIR against Dr Riaz Ahmed and arrest of the responsible people of the law enforcing agency, who maltreated him. They also demanded removal of the retired persons posted as vice chancellors and pro-vice chancellors in Pakistan, particularly in Sindh immediately.
