Attack on South Asian Free Media Association official, his wife condemned

LAHORE: South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and Media Commission-Pakistan have jointly condemned an attack on SAFMA Pakistan General Secretary Sirmed Manzoor and his wife. Sirmed Manzoor’s wife Marvi Sirmed is a freelance columnist and works for a UN agency.

“Journalists have continuously been targeted over the last few years. Authorities must act swiftly to end this cycle of violence and impunity,” SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam, Media Commission Pakistan President M Ziauddin and SAFMA Pakistan President Nusrat Javeed said in a joint statement.

“SAFMA and SAMC welcome the launch of an immediate inquiry into the attack and demand the provision of security to Sirmed Manzoor and his family,” the heads of the media rights bodies said. “Threats to the safety of journalists are mounting. The authorities should work towards ensuring that the journalists work in a safe environment and do not become victims of anti-media attacks,” they said.
