ATC summons reporters of five newspapers

KARACHI- An anti-terrorism court issued summons for appearance of reporters of five newspapers in the killing case of two workers of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon of ATC-2 called the reporters of the Evening Special (Karachi), Ummat, Daily Public (Karachi), Awam and Janbaz on an application filed by the defence counsel for the two accused under section 540 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Two workers of the Tehrik-i-Jafferia Pakistan (TJP) – Syed Muhammed Qasim and Hasan Ali – are being tried for killing two Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) workers and injuring seven others in an attack on the victims’ Suzuki pick-up.

In his application, defence attorney Syed Tassawar Hussain Rizvi disputed the date of arrest of his clients and submitted that the newspapers had carried the news regarding the arrest of the accused on Nov 11 and 19 while the police had shown their arrest on a later date. The judge issued notices to reporters of five newspapers to appear before the court on March 14.

The two SSP activists – Muhammed Iqbal and Abdullah – were killed and seven others were wounded when their vehicle was fired upon on Oct 22 last year. The victims were on their way after attending a party rally.

The two TJP men along with five others, including the provincial chief of the party, Allama Hasan Turabi, were booked in the First Information Report (FIR) registered with the SITE police. Syed Muhammed Qasim and Hasan Ali were arrested by the SITE police and five others, including Allama Hasan Turabi, Mirza Yousuf and Asif, were shown absconders in the final charge-sheet.
