APNS to provide draft act for Press Council

ISLAMABAD (PPI) – A delegation of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) led by its President Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman held a meeting with the Federal Minister for Information Mushahid Hussain Syed here on Monday and discussed issues relating to newspaper industry.

Matters regarding Press-Government relations, freedom of press, constitution of Press Council and advertisement related issues were discussed at the meeting held in a cordial atmosphere.

APNS agreed to provide a draft Act for the constitution of Press Council by July 30, 1999. APNS members raised the issue of recent events relating to journalists and publications and expressed their concern that these could damage the image of the country abroad and would not be conducive for the healthy government-press relations.

The Federal Minister rejected any impression about impediments to press freedom and categorically stated that, “we are a media friendly government” and have neither sought to curb press freedom nor endeavoured to impose any law on the media. The Minister reiterated government’s commitment to preserve, promote and protect press freedom.
