APNS pledges Rs10m ad space for quake victims

KARACHI, October 19 2005: The All-Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) will contribute advertisement space worth Rs10 million towards relief for the earthquake victims, states a press release of the Society.

The Executive Committee of the Society and the Standing Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), at their joint emergency meeting, expressed their profound grief over the casualties, destruction and loss of life and assets in Azad Kashmir, the Northern Areas, NWFP, and Islamabad.

The joint meeting chaired by Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, President, APNS, offered Fateha for the journalists, reporters, and other innocent people who lost their lives in the earthquake and expressed their condolences on their demise.

The joint meeting decided to donate an initial contribution of Rs10 million per month in the form of advertisements in member publications related to relief, evacuation, and rehabilitation of the earthquake victims. The advertisement campaigns, routed through the APNS, will be available for charitable and welfare organisations of the private sector engaged in relief efforts.

The joint committee of the APNS and the CPNE noted with satisfaction that the print and electronic media has played its due role in highlighting the magnitude of the disaster and disseminating awareness among the general public to rise to the occasion for the relief and welfare of earthquake victims.

The joint meeting noted that it was required that media play its role judiciously and report the situation objectively and authentically, avoiding sensationalism and highlighting the genuine requirements of the victims.
