APNS hails govt decision to lift ban on ads

The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), on September 5, welcomed the federal government’s decision of lifting the advertisement ban on Nawa-i-Waqt, The Nation and other newspapers by the previous governments.

The decision was taken in light of APNS and Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) meeting with the then Prime Minister Ch. Shujaat Hussain and Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz on August 11, 2004.

The APNS welcomed the federal government’s move to uplift the ban and said the practice of issuing press advice to newspapers should also be stopped immediately to ensure that a new era of press freedom and receptive relations with the press begins under the leadership of the new Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

The APNS mentioned that the government has belatedly realized the use of government advertising, to threaten the free press, is counter productive and limits growth of the press freedom.

APNS expressed hope that the change of attitude will be apparent and said all the pending issues including amendments in the press laws and formation of Press Council of Pakistan would be resolved in consultations with the press bodies.
