APNS elects new office-bearers

KARACHI: The annual General Council meeting of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) has unanimously elected Hameed Haroon as president, Muhammad Aslam Kazi as secretary-general, Jamil Athar as senior vice-president, Imtinan Shahid as vice-president, Syed Sarmad Ali as joint secretary and Umer Mujeeb Shami as finance secretary for the second term.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Hameed Haroon, the president for the year 2007-08. The meeting unanimously approved the report of the Executive Committee for the preceding year as well as the annual accounts of the APNS.

The General Council noted with grave concern that in the year 2007-08, Pakistan has been marred by many terrorist activities of different nature, suicide bombings, target killings and militant insurgencies in the Northern Areas, targeting people from all walks of life, including journalists, law-enforcement agencies and innocent citizens. The members noted with deep sorrow the catastrophic assassination of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (Shaheed) and offered Fateha for her.

The General Council, attended by 192 members from across the country, formed an Election Commission headed by Younus Riaz (Daily Beopar), with Ghulam Nabi Chandio (Daily Pak) and Imran Ahmed (Daily Action) as members.

The Election Commission conducted the elections of the Executive Committee for the year 2008-09. Following were declared elected unopposed: Karachi daily seats (six seats): Awami Awaz, Millat, Deyanat, Business Recorder, Aghaz, Qaumi Akhbar.

Lahore daily seats (six seats): Pakistan, Jang, Musawat, Dawn, Nawa-i-Waqt, Khabrain.

Rawailpindi/Islamabad daily seats (two seats): Ausaf and Sahafat.

Balochistan daily seats (two seats): Awam (Quetta) and Balochistan Times.

Frontier daily seats (two seats): Mashriq and Wahdat.

Sindh excluding Karachi (two seats): Kaleem (Sukkur) and Kawish (Hyderabad).

Punjab excluding Lahore/Rawalpindi (three seats): Paigham (Faisalabad), Business Report (Faisalabad) and Aftab (Multan).

General seats (metropolitan dailies, two seats): Kainat (Karachi) and Tijarat (Lahore).

General seats (regional dailies, two seats): Ibrat (Hyderabad) and Balochistan Express (Quetta).

Periodical seats (four seats): Azam, Kiran, Naey Ufaq and Roohani Digest.

News and news comments periodical (Sindh/Balochistan, one seat): Takbeer (Karachi).

News and news comments periodical (general, one seat): Naya Rukh.

The president-elect nominated Qudsia K Khan, Daily Financial Post, Karachi, on women publishers’ seat.

The General Council, through a special resolution, elected Altaf Hassan Qureshi, Professor SB Hassan and Sharif Farooq as the honorary permanent members of the Executive Committee in recognition of their contribution to the profession. The meeting thoroughly reviewed the conditions prevailing in the industry and adopted resolutions to be released later on.

The APNS council, through another special resolution, expressed profound grief over the sad demise of some of the colleagues, friends and immediate relatives of the APNS members, including Tahir Mirza, former editor Daily Dawn, Allah Ditta father of Waseem Ahmed, Daily Awam Quetta, Atiya Ameenuddin sister of Mahmud-ul-Aziz, Monthly Pictorial News Review, Naureen Arif daughter of Jamil Ather, Daily Tijarat, mother-in-law of Javed Mehr Shamsi of the Daily Kaleem, Sukkur, aunt of Najamuddin Sheikh of the Daily Deyanat, Sajjad Ali Chandio son of Ghulam Nabi Chandio of the Daily Pak, grandson and sister of Mushtaq Ahmed Qureshi of the Monthly Naey Ufaq, mother of Kamran Khan of the Geo TV channel, Dr Chishti Mujahid of the Weekly Akhbar-e-Jahan, Muhammad Sarwar Kakar (Senator), Quetta and Tariq Bandey of the Al-Jareeda, Lahore.

The General Council was addressed by members, including Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Shami, Arshad A Zuberi, Mumtaz A Tahir, Jamil Athar, Muhammad Aslam Kazi, Sardar Khan Niazi, Dr Jabbar Khattak, Fasieh Iqbal, Aamir Mahmood, Najam-ul-Hassan, Khushnood Ali Khan, Qudsia K Khan, Sharif Farooq, Abdul Rashid Ghazi, Altaf Hassan Qureshi, Usman Arab Saati, Abdul Wadood Qureshi, Aleem Ahmed and Khalid Mahmood Shah.
