APNS condemns bid to disrupt unity in newspaper industry

KARACHI- The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) resolves to fight out conspiracy to disrupt unity in the ranks of newspaper industry and foil efforts to divide the industry into different factions, a society spokesman said.

All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) Secretary General Mohammed Aslam Kazi, while announcing the decisions taken at the executive committee of the APNS, has said that the committee considered in length organisational matters in the light of different articles and statements appeared in a section of the newspapers in an attempt to malign the society and its office-bearers.

In a press release issued here on July 5th, 2003, he said that the executive committee, chaired by its President Arif Nizami, noted with concern that efforts were afoot to destroy the unity among the ranks of the newspaper industry on the behest of some vested interests who were out to weaken the newspaper organisations in an attempt to impose anti-press policies.

The committee, in a resolution, has declared that the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) is the sole representative organisation of the editors in the country and any effort to malign or weaken this organisation would be treated against the interest of the APNS.

The executive committee, the release said, has advised its member publications to understand the destructive consequences of the conspiracy to form a parallel organisation against the CPNE and remain united to foil such efforts with a firm resolve.

The committee is of the opinion that the destabilisation of institutions, especially the press, tantamount to destabilise the civilian set-up and negate democratic norms in the country.

The committee has urged the Jamali government to take stock of the ongoing attack on press organisations, as it would ultimately reflect upon democratic disposition in Pakistan.

The executive committee decided to dissolve the APNS committees/sub-committees formed in its meeting held on April 10 and authorised the president and the secretary general to reconstitute these committees/sub-committees keeping in view the observations of the members of the society.

It considered applications for associate membership and decided to grant associate membership to Daily Times, Lahore, Daily The Nation Karachi, Daily Din Karachi and Monthly Star Dust, Karachi.

It also considered the report of advertising/marketing committee and on its recommendation, decided to grant provisional accreditation to Eiman Ad Communications, Lahore, registration of Pak Mediacom (Pvt) Ltd, Karachi and Mindshare Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Karachi.

The committee also decided to confirm the accreditation of Friends Advertisers, Karachi with immediate effect.

“The members are pleased to note that Syed Faseih Iqbal, senior vice president, and Jamil Ather, member executive committee, have successfully undergone open heart surgery. They prayed good health and early recovery of their colleagues.”
