Altaf did receive money from Beg, claims Afaq

KARACHI – Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi chief Afaq Ahmed on Monday made a candid confession that he did receive Rs5 million from Younis Habib to organise the MQM-H.

Addressing a joint media briefing with Sindh United Party chief Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah at his residence Haider Manzil, Ahmed alleged that Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain had received money from retired chief of army staff Aslam Beg through Younis Habib, saying he was a witness to this deal. “I am ready to testify before any court, if needed.”

He said his meeting with Jalal Shah was about deweaponising the metropolis. He said “he has started a campaign for de-weaponisation of Karachi and was holding parleys with political leaders in the province.

Ahmed underlined the need for de-weaponising to preserve peace in the country, saying de-weaponisation of Karachi was necessary since it was the financial hub of the country. He warned that peace in the metropolis would not possible in the next elections if the metropolis was not made weapon-free.

“We are against any weapon be it licensed or unlicenced.”

To a media query, the MQM-H chief said, “We are against the establishment of new provinces on ethnic basis. We wouldn’t allow anyone to divide our homeland.”

Announcing his party’s participation in the next general elections, Ahmed said the MQM-H was starting its political activities in the metropolis.

He underlined the need for ending “no-go areas” in Karachi, saying he had moved the high court against Red Zones.

Jalal Shah demanded of de-weaponisation of the country, saying he would make every effort to be a bridge between the Mohajir and Sindhi communities.
