All over the country (and the world), the print media is strongly condemning the assassination of the Chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former premier, Benazir Bhutto. They are also lashing out at the rulers for the so-called flour, gas and power crisis and the unjustified hike in the prices of everyday commodities.

An Urdu weekly Jaddojuhad maintains that the people had to face such a crisis because there has been constant dictatorship in Pakistan. But here are the rulers who take every opportunity to speak out against their political opponents. They take up every issue whether it is a question of inquiry against the assassination of Benazir Bhutto or the emergence of future political leadership of the country. Besides, the people who are now no longer a part of the government are acting as the rulers and this shows just how much the ruling elite supports and backs them.

The Hamdard Thinkers’ Forum (HTF) that held its Shoora (meeting) to discuss the overall situation in the country after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto the other day concluded that dictatorship and the dictators were actually responsible for the existing social and economic crisis.

The speakers at the meeting demanded that the government to expose the real culprits behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. However, the meeting did not discuss the viewpoint of the government, which appears to be quite determined not to allow the UN inquiry committee to investigate as demanded by the heirs of Benazir Bhutto.

On the other hand, the observers think it is pointless to reject the demand to hold a UN inquiry into the assassination of their leader.

The demand has not only been made by the heirs — her children and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari — but also by the people and the workers of the party. When a party has taken such a firm stand, it should be imperative on the part of the government to do everything that is legal and according to the desires of the heirs.

President Pervez Musharraf, who had declared the murder as martyrdom by announcing an official mourning, is now rejecting the stance of the heirs to allow the UN inquiry. Observers note that political opponents like Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pervaiz Elahi, Arbab Rahim, Mumtaz Bhutto and others have also chosen to level baseless allegations against the family and heirs which is ironic.

The people who earlier had left no stone unturned to defame Asif Zardari by calling him Mr ten per cent killer, have now chosen another extreme step involving and implicating the same gentleman in the assassination on the baseless grounds that he is one of the beneficiaries.

Regardless of the changing situations, the recently produced writings by the literati show that December 27, 2007 has disturbed the masses. Consider the following verse by Dr Khalid Javed Jan who says, ‘Uss phool ko masla jo chaman zaar ka dil tha/ Uss khaab ko kuchlaa keh jo har aankh ka til ha.’

Another piece by Raza Abdul Fatah Abbasi sheds light on Benazir Bhutto’s spiritual voyage in the context of giving her respect and her beliefs regarding spiritual personalities.

Abbasi’s writing notes that in her life she had high respect for spiritual superiors and elders who believed in the purity of one’s soul, peace, brotherhood and humanism. Since she cared and respected others, her martyrdom certainly led to her salvation and deliverance.
