A move for rights of female workers

There is neither any law, nor social security for female workers who work indoors, claimed Aqsa Khan, the manager of social and women workers rights unit action aid, during a provincial advisory meeting of Home-based Women Workers (HBWW) held in a local hotel.

She said that these female workers faced numerous troubles and did not get reasonable remuneration for their work. She said that to help the female workforce, ‘Action Aid’ with the cooperation of Labour Education Foundation and Women Workers Helpline had started working on a local level.

Cooperative centres had been setup in which community kitchens provide meals at affordable rates. We are here to discuss a strategy to stop the exploitation of these women under the International Law C-177, which the government should accept and implement, said Aqsa Khan.

She remarked that they had also conducted a research on the informal sector and prepared a legal document ‘Women Protection Bill,’ to protect the rights of worker in the informal sector. Zahra Akbar Khan of Labour Education Foundation added that considering the different national and international articles, labour laws could also be applied to the informal sector.

AMK Azmati presented the ‘Women Protection Bill’ and the participants presented their suggestions over the bill. The meeting was presided over by Deputy Director Workers Education Karachi, Shahiduddin Khan.
