50 including president press club arrested

HYDERABAD – As many as fifty political activists has been arrested here on Thursday including 40 workers of PPP, 5 of Awami Tehrik and some activists of National Awami Party.

Police intruded inside Hyderabad Press Club where journalists were observing token hunger strike within Press Club premises against ban on TV channels and after misbehaving with journalists arrested president of Hyderabad Press Club Khalid Khokhar and former president Iqbal Mallah.

The action was taken on orders of DSP Cantonment who along with heavy police stood at gate of Press Club. It was first time that police had taken action inside Press Club. Later a large number of journalists shouted slogans against emergency and restrictions on media.

However, after their contact with DPO Hyderabad the arrested journalists were released after two hours.

Earlier, Pakistan People’s Party workers led by acting district president Amanullah Siyal,
Maula Bux Chandio, MNA Farheen Mughal, Pervez Ansari and Pasha Kazi held protest demonstration before press club in presence of police which continues to seal press club since emergency. They raised slogans of Jeay Bhutto, Jeay Benazir, down with Musharraf. Police arrested 40 workers and took them to jail in prison van. Five workers of Awami Tehrik courted their arrest at gate of civil court building amidst the anti-government slogans according to schedule of party to court arrest daily. They were Noor Ahmed
Katiar, Sadiq Qureshi, Saleh, Ayaz and Asad. They were taken to jail immediately.

Shamsherul Mulk of ANP led a group of workers and held protest demonstration against emergency and PCO before press club. They were also arrested and sent to jail in prison van. Meanwhile, president High! Court Bar Hyderabad Kazi Abdul Sattar who was sent to central jail Hyderabad for 90 days under MPO along with Shaikh Aziz president of Hyderabad District Bar was shifted to his home at Qasimabad after falling ill in jail.
