LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has received 183 complaints so far from across the Punjab against the election-2008 code of conduct violation, ECP officials told Daily Times.

ECP public relations officer Arshad Ali Kamal said 20 complaints were lodged against the transfers of teachers. He said the complaints have been forwarded to the Education secretary.

According to the election code of conduct no government official can be transferred after November 20 till the general elections are held. The contesting candidates have alleged that pre-election transfers have been made in their constituencies. The complainants have alleged that transfers were made to appoint the ‘selected’ presiding officers at the polling stations. 113 complaints are lodged against the violation of the general code of conduct issued for the general elections.

The ECP has disposed off 40 complaints on several grounds, while rest of them are still pending, Kamal said.

ECP secretary Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad said the ECP would look into the matter and transfers would be barred if the complaints were true.

In 10 complaints contesting candidates have expressed their concern over the neutrality of the district nazim in their constituencies. Kamal said four complaints were being addressed and six were pending.

40 candidates have lodged complaints against the district coordination officers. All complaints are pending. Provincial election commissioner Ayaz Muhammad Baig said the complaints were being pursued. He said it could take a week to probe the matter. He said the complaints were forwarded to the EC secretary for the actions if they were found true. He said a large number of complaints lodged by the candidates were without evidence, so no action could be taken.
