2m flood-hit people badly need help

ISLAMABAD: Around two million people in five flood-hit districts of Punjab, Balochistan and Punjab are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, according to a report.

The report issued by the Multi-sector Initial Rapid Assessment (Mira), a project of international aid agencies and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said this year’s flood had served to increase food insecurity in Jafferabad and Naseerabad districts in Balochistan, Jacobabad and Kashmore in Sindh and Rajanpur in Punjab.

According to the Mira report, 88 per cent of the communities surveyed have lost all food stocks. Some 90 per cent of the people take meal once or twice a day and child feeding has gone down to 88 per cent in some cases.

The flood has brought to a standstill all economic and social activities and destroyed 58 per cent of the irrigation channels. The calamity has kept 24 per cent of the students away from their institutions due to inaccessible roads.
