25-member NA committee on Hudood Laws

ISLAMABAD, August 24 2006: With MMA deciding not to participate till finalisation of arrangements with the government, Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain Wednesday (Aug 23) constituted a 25-member Select Committee for amendments in Hudood Laws.

Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Ejazul Haq has been appointed Chairman of the committee to consider and report on Criminal Law Amendment (Protection of Women) Act 2006. The committee will meet at the Speaker’s Lounge today (Thursday).

Leader of the House in Senate Wasim Sajjad and Minister of State for Law Shahid Akram Bhinder had a meeting with the MMA leaders, including Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, at the parliamentary lodges to convince them to participate in the committee proceedings. Nonetheless, the MMA leaders reiterated their position of no participation till the finalisation of arrangements with the ruling quarters. “We are not going to participate in the committee for time being,” Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said.
