132 IT projects worth Rs 11 billion launched

ISLAMABAD- Information Technology (IT), and Telecom Division has launched over 132 projects worth more than Rs 11 billion during the last two years.

“The main focus areas were creating an extensive pool of high quality manpower in key areas of IT and Telecom, enhancement of telecom infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for private sector.” official sources said.

The sources said, the government being fully cognizant of the problems being faced by general public due to high fee structure of private IT institutes, is giving priority to providing high quality IT education at affordable price.

To achieve this end, the government has already established three new IT universities and set up IT departments in 31 public sector universities of the country, they said.

“This will increase annual output of computer graduates by over 7000,” the sources added.

They said that Virtual University, which launched its BCS course on March 23, has the capacity to increase annual output of computer graduates by over 7000 in five years.

The other HRD programmes include award of over 1000 scholarships to computer graduates, Endowment Fund of over Rs 1 billion to public sector engineering universities for higher education in IT & Telecom and vocational training programmes to produce over 100,000 professionals in IT enabled services.

The sources said, 56 public sector universities are being interconnected with each other and with institutions world over, through educational Internet project to share information and research.

There is also a remarkable achievement in infrastructure enhancement as Internet has been expanded from 29 cities to 580 cities.
