13 killed in Karachi violence

Firing during funeral procession of slain MWM leader; bomb found from Numaish Chowrangi
KARACHI: Thirteen people, including a leader of the Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslemeen (MWM), and a worker of the Sunni Tehreek (ST) were killed in separate incidents in the metropolis on Tuesday. Among the dead was the production coordinator of the Geo Creative Department. Meanwhile, a 10-kg bomb was also recovered from the Numaish area.
Allama Agha Aftab Haider Jafri and Mirza Shahid Ali were gunned down on Tuesday morning near the Shahbuddin Market, Saddar Parking Plaza.Police sources said that Allama Aftab and Shahid Ali, who were close friends, were residents of Lines Area. Allama Aftab was the deputy secretary general of MWM and also a former leader of the Jafferia Alliance.
On Tuesday morning, Allama Aftab, along with his colleague Mirza Shahid Ali, was on his way to work when two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them. The victims were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) while activists and leaders of the MWM also reached the JPMC. Allama Aftab and Mirza Shahid Ali succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Later, activists and leaders of the MWM protested over the killing of their leader and accused their rival group of murdering them. The investigators have termed the attack a part of sectarian rift.
Afterwards, a protest was launched on the MA Jinnah Road near Numaish Chowrangi. In the meantime, security personnel and scouts of the Jafferia Alliance stopped a suspicious black Corolla car from entering the rally. The scouts said that the man in the car threw a bomb outside the Quaid-i-Azam’s mausoleum near Gate-2 and sped away. The bomb disposal squad was called to defuse the 10-kg remote-controlled device.
Police said that unidentified armed men opened fire at the funeral procession when it reached Liaquatabad No-10, near Super Market. Two personnel of Rangers, Majnoo and Ghulam Rasool, were injured in the incident.
According to the Sindh Rangers spokesman, “a few miscreants resorted to violence and created a law and order situation at Dak Khana Chowk, Liaquatabad, during the funeral procession of slain Allama Aftab Haider Jafri of Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen.”
He added that unidentified miscreants torched vehicles in the area. Rangers rushed and tried to stop them when the miscreants pelted stones and opened fire on them. Subsequently, three participants of the procession got injured in crossfire between the miscreants and Rangers.
Police said that two injured of the Super Market incident expired during treatment at a local hospital. A staff member of Geo News Syed Faraz Haider was also injured in the line of duty who later died. He was the production coordinator of Geo Creative Department. The law enforcers controlled the situation and passed the funeral procession to Wadi-i-Hussain.
In a separate incident, Saeed Qadri was shot dead in New Town police station limits outside his shop. The deceased received five bullet wounds on his upper torso. Separately, in the limits of Kalri police station, armed men gunned down Faizullah and Imran on Tuesday night near the KPT flats when they were busy in drinking liquor.
In Gulberg area, three tortured and bullet-riddled bodies were found on Tuesday morning. SHO Tariq Baig of Gulberg Police Station said that they had retrieved the bodies found under the Karimabad Bridge on Tuesday morning and had shifted them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Meanwhile, an employee of KGL Factory, Imran Shah, was gunned down in Quaidabad when he was on his way home. In another incident, Saqib was shot dead near Timber Market, Awami Colony. He was shot twice in the head.
