10 more killed in targeted attacks

KARACHI: After a relatively calm Ashura, the city lost 10 men across different neighbourhoods on Wednesday. Two workers of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and a caretaker of an imambargah were among the victims.

The bodies of the two PPP workers were found from Ghazi Goth within the jurisdiction of Manghopir police. Barkat Farooq, 18, and Danish Saeed, 17, were residents of Orangi Town and worked at the party’s PS-95 unit, said PPP district central president Sohail Abidi. District west DIG Javed Odho said the police have also found the empty shells of a 9mm and a 30-bore pistol from the crime scene, which shows that they were killed at the same spot.

In Nazimabad, the caretaker of Jamia Imamia Imambargah was shot dead. According to Gulbahar police DSP Iftikhar Lodhi, 70-year-old Hassan Mohsin alias Mama was shot thrice near his house. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Following the killing, the law and order situation became unstable in Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Hassan Noman Colony and Rizvia Society, where shops were shut down. A bus was also set on fire in Rizvia Society.

Separately, 25-year-old Faraz, son of Fazal Din was killed while his friend, Akbar Khaliq, was wounded when two men on a motorcycle opened fire at them near Hassan Square. Irfan alias Latif, 32, was shot dead on MA Jinnah Road. Aram Bagh police said the deceased was standing at a paan shop when two men on a motorcycle shot and killed him. They suspect that the killing occurred due to a personal enmity.

In Aligarh Colony, butcher Junaid, son of Chiraghuddin, was killed and two men, Nasir and Mehboob, were injured in a shooting at the meat shop.

In Kalri police remits, a shop owner, 40-year-old Riaz Niazi, was gunned down inside the tyre market. SHO Chand Khan Niazi said the victim’s colleague shot and killed him after they had an argument over collecting donations for the shopkeepers’ union.

In Metroville, a factory worker, 28-year-old Younus Saeed, was gunned down. SITE A-Section police DSP Rana Shoaib said the deceased worked at a garment factory. A 42-year-old construction contractor, Bilal Memon, was found dead at his house in Jamshed Quarters. DSP Qaiser Ali Shah said that the deceased was stabbed.

In Khamosh Colony, 32-year-old Muhammad Sadiq, son of Abdul Majeed, was shot dead. Gulbahar police said the deceased hailed from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and was working as a watchman.
