Women education key to achieve development goals: Ghani

QUETTA, July 19 2006: Balochistan Governor Awais Ahmed Ghani has called for taking revolutionary steps to improve the quality of women education in Balochistan in order to produce talented and brilliant students. Speaking as chief guest at the 1st convocation of Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University here on July 18, he said it was indispensable to improve human resources through quality education for securing distinctive status in the world.

“We cannot achieve the goal of development and prosperity unless we improve quality of women education. Without education empowerment of women is impossible”, he said, adding that we should strengthen both pillars of the society through education. “Importance of education can not be denied as all the scientific advancements and achievements made by the developed nations of the world are due to education”, he explained.

He said that the government had especially focused on improvement of education sector particularly the primary and higher education in the province. In this regard the government has allocated millions of rupees for improvement of the sector. Besides, Higher Education Cell has been established at Governor House to monitor the universities in Balochistan for the purpose. The governor said establishment of the Women University in Balochistan was encouraging and positive step towards bringing social revolution in the province as it has built up confidence of womenfolk for getting education boldly.

It is a matter of proud that the university has 800 students, 770 are from Balochistan and 30 from other provinces. The university plays pivotal role in improvement of women education in Balochistan. He called upon graduates of the university to contribute and play role for bringing about positive social change in the province. He expressed the hope that the university would soon become the leading women university of the country.

A number of universities in the province had been increased during the last four years while other varsities would also be set up soon, he said. The governor expressed pleasure over improvement of educational environment and quality of teachers and students in Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University. He paid tributes to the Vice Chancellor and other teaching staff of the varsity for their achievements and extended his heartiest felicitation to students who received their degrees in various courses of studies including in MA and MSc.

He also greeted parents of the students. Former prime minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali also spoke on the occasion and highlighted brief history and efforts made for establishing the women university in the province. He said Balochistan does not lack in talents and potentials, but we should provide opportunities to the youths of the province that they might express their talents. Highlighting the significance of technical education he urged youths to gain technical education, which is need of the hour.

Vice Chancellor of the Women University Dr Shahida Jaffary highlighted the achievements, problems and challenges of the university. She thanked the governor, Zafarullah Jamali, Chairman, Higher Education Commission and others for their supports and assistance to the university. Earlier, the governor conferred gold medals and degrees to successful students.
