Woman dies for lack of maternity care

BADIN, May 11: Poverty has claimed the life of a pregnant woman as she could not get proper medical care for lack of money.

The woman, Husna 22, wife of poor farmer Ahmed Sheedi, died on Thursday because of stillbirth and excessive bleeding.

The poor farmer tried to get money on loan for the treatment of his wife in a private hospital but could not succeed thus lost both his wife and the child.

There is no maternity home or a women hospital in Pangrio union council. A health unit exists which has one LHV and handles only normal delivery cases while the complicated ones are referred to Tando Bagho or Badin hospitals, located at a distance of about 10km.

Ahmed Sheedi, resident of Pir Qasim Shah village in UC Pangrio took her to a local midwife where the patient could not get relief and was rushed to the BHU Pangrio. But due to stillbirth she died on way to hospital.

The family criticised the non- availability maternity care in the area and village people demanded a maternity home or women hospital in Pangrio town.

They said this will help in bringing down the rate of death of female patients.
