Wali’s murder: journalists stage walkout from Sindh PA

Karachi: Journalists covering proceedings of Sindh Assembly staged a token walkout on Tuesday against the lack of progress in the murder case of Geo’s reporter Wali Khan Babar.

Sindh Minister for Power Ms Shazia Marri, Sharjeel Memon and others met with the protesting media representatives and assured them that the killers would be arrested soon and their motives would be exposed.

Later, Shazia Marri told the house that Wali Khan Babar was an active and hardworking journalist who was gunned down on January 13 in the city while returning from his office. She recalled that this house had also passed the resolution, condemning Wali’s murder. She said that the reporter’s killing triggered anxiety among the journalists about security. Ms Marri promised that the concerns of journalists would be conveyed to the authorities concerned.

Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro observed that Press Gallery constitutes an important part of the Assembly and added that the journalists’ concerns should be addressed urgently.

Law Minister Ayaz Soomro said that he had talked to CCPO Karachi on Monday and discussed with him the murder of the journalist. He said that the police have already detained some suspects involved in recent targeted killings, who were being interrogated by joint investigation team, and hoped that Wali’s killers would be arrested soon.

MQM’s Khwaja Izharul Hasan said that Wali Khan was killed while performing his duty and extended his support to the journalists’ community for the arrest of his killers.
