The News cartoonist wins global award

Karachi: A cartoonist associated with The News International has bagged the second position in a global editorial cartoon competition, beating India and 70 other nations.

Over 1,000 cartoons were submitted from 73 countries in the contest sponsored by the Centre for International Private Enterprise. “We were thrilled to receive more than 1,000 submissions that featured quality draftsmanship, clever ideas, and most importantly — courage,” said Tom Gibson, chairman of the judges’ committee, in a press release issued from Washington.

The cartoon of Pakistan’s Karim Rathor was based on the theme of corruption. The other two themes were democracy and gender equality. “Corruption is a severe problem not only in one country — it is the problem of the entire world,” said Rathor after receiving the award. A cartoonist from Israel won the first position while India bagged the third in the same category.
